Dear Alvaro’s Friends, Family, and Supporters,

Alvaro is in dire need of immediate, practical solidarity from all who support his emancipation from unjust incarceration and cruel punishment.

Alvaro's Recent Hardship
In these past few weeks it has come to our attention that Alvaro is enduring multiple forms of inadequate and cruel treatment by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ).

He is in need of dire medical attention; the TDCJ has placed him in more inhospitable holding conditions; the TDCJ has confiscated and stolen from him; the TDCJ has limited his mail correspondence; and when in transport to Lubbock, TX, the TDCJ transported him with—what you will is agree is—little to no regard for his health or comfort.

Call to Action!
Therefore, we are urging you to email or call relevant TDCJ authorities (below) by Thursday, April 14th, 2016 (midnight) to protest these conditions and demand immediate improvements.

We have prepared sample grievances for your convenience when contacting the officials below (click to download).  (Click here to preview them).

Send as many as you can in one or more emails!

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and from Alvaro's.  Your solidarity does matter and will make a difference.

Without solidarity, nothing is possible!  Free Alvaro!  Free them all!

Committee to Free Alvaro Luna Hernandez

April 9th, 2016

Above: Excerpt from an April 13th, 2016 letter from Xinachtli Luna Hernandez to his defense committee and supporters regarding prisoner solidarity.

Dear Alvaro’s Friends, Family, and Supporters,

Xinachtli: Alvaro's New Name
First, we would like to inform Alvaro's supporters that we shall be referring to him as Xinachtli as much as is possible because he regards "Alvaro" as his slave name.

Xinachtli is Nahuatl for "seed".

Results of April 9th Email Campaign
The April 9th call to action that Xinachtli supporters partook in had the effect of angering prison authorities at the insolent defiance of those who are supposed to be quiet.

But more importantly, it had the effect of showing them and us that his overseers can't do what they want with him because there is a solidaric community overlooking Xinachtli.

New Minimum Objective: Safeguard Xinachtli's Health
The maximum objective remains: emancipation for Xinachtli.  Yet given the grim news recently that he has hepatitis C, his supporters have now a new minimum objective—treatment, so that he does not die from this ailment before emancipation or after.

Who to Email
Therefore, we are urging Xinachtli's supporters to join us on this new front in an email campaign directed at minimum, to the Health Services of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and and Brad Livingston, Executive Director of the TDCJ.  Their emails are

And if you have time, send the same message to the Texas Governor Greg Abbott; your Texas legislators (if in Texas); and John Whitmire, Chair of the Texas Senate's Committee on Criminal Justice, using the email forms found on their pages in the links just provided.

Script for Your Convenience
We're urging you to email the following basic message by Friday, May 6th, 2016 (feel free to copy and paste!),

Email Subject:
concerning health treatment for TDCJ prisoner Alvaro Hernandez, #255735

Email Body:
Dear Officials of the TDCJ and Officials and Representatives of the Texas Government,

I am writing in concern of TDCJ prisoner Alvaro Luna Hernandez, #255735.

Alvaro has contracted Hepatitis C while in the confines of the Texas prison system.

This in itself constitutes cruel and neglectful treatment to the inmate population and Alvaro himself, and I do not wish to see a worsening of this injustice.

Therefore, I am requesting that the TDCJ

1) acquire for and administer to Alvaro all the necessary Hepatitis C medications for the best treatment;

2) transfer Alvaro to the Montford Medical Unit in Lubbock, TX for placement under a 12-week treatment plan to cure him of this virus;

3) ensure that Alvaro's transfer is carried out humanely, with dignifying accommodations—unlike his March 2016 transfer to Robertson Unit in Abilene, TX—, and that none of his correspondence or possessions are robbed from him by TDCJ authorities under spurious pretenses.

Please contact us if you have any questions.
Faithfully yours,

April 28, 2016

As of early April 2016 Texas prison wage-slaves are striking—an action facilitated by the Incarcerated Workers' Organizing Committee (IWOC) of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) anticapitalist revolutionary workers' union.

Xinachtli is a fellow IWW member and supports the strike, AS SHOULD YOU!

For more information or to get involved, visit IWOC, or contact us.

Dear Friends of Alvaro,
Comrades, brothers, sisters, allies, friends, I am so tired of the way they are treating Alvaro, all because they claim he’s part of a “gang” (of revolutionary anarchists!!!)

We thought we had gotten a win – Alvaro was to be transported to Lubbock for Hep-C treatment. Considering what’s going on with Mumia, getting Alvaro the best treatment for Hepatitis-C is considered of life-saving importance to his long term well-being. Many prisoners contract Hepatitis-C because of prison conditions who would not have gotten the disease if they were not incarcerated in over-populated, dirty prisons without adequate medical treatment for cuts (which could happen post fights or sexual assaults). Okay, some of that statistically is stick-and-pokes, but nevertheless the prison has responsibility in Alvaro’s contraction of Hepatitis-C, and it is good that they are giving him the best possible treatment, even though we were obviously concerned over his transport
.  We had been led to understand that Alvaro would be sent to the Montford Unit, the special Psych/Medical Unit, known as the best in TDCJ, for 8 to 12 weeks treatment.

Here’s the good news: Alvaro went to Lubbock to begin his treatment, receiving a liver ultrasound to determine the severity of his case.

Here’s the bad news: his transport through Amarillo was rough. As always, Alvaro says it best himself:

Woof all, now that he has been returned to Allred, they have upped his security level without justification:

Alvaro Luna Hernandez is a Chicano liberationist and anarchist who was targeted for his political organizing. He was arrested without warrant, and sentenced to 50 years for aggravated assault on a peace officer after peacefully disarming Sheriff McDaniels and running. He turns 64 in May. You can find out more about his story at

Campaign to Free Alvaro Luna was part of the broad coalition of counter-protesters to the National Socialist Movement attempting to rally in Rockwall, TX. We met with local antifa, anons & spoke to Occupy Dallas live stream, encouraging all to write Alvaro from home and at the protest site while handing out anti-nationalist literature.

Alvaro’s mom is 100 years old, and has had three hip surgeries. She wants to go visit her son in the Spring when the weather is warmer. We need volunteers to help coordinate transporting her in a wheel-chair accessible vehicle from Alpine, TX to Iowa Park, TX (near Wichita Falls). Help make this possible!

Alvaro has recently been transferred to a new unit and is facing additional challenges within administrative segregation. Earlier this year, he was transported to a new unit under atrocious conditions, then he was denied access to some of his property due to legal materials counting against his volume restrictions. Recently, we have received word he has been placed on a health diet restriction and been moved to a segregated medical pod within SHU. He is interested in teaming up with lawyers and activists interested in exposing horrible prison conditions within TDCJ as well as helping him to get access to better medical care.

The Black August '09 gathering at Monkey Wrench went off very well in Austin. Albeit an intimate group of 25 participants, the familiar prison activist faces amongst the group were a welcome sight.

After a brief introduction about Black August and the activities of the Monkey Wrench Collective, Carlos Perez de Alejo introduced Twitch - Entropy of ABC Para-Legal Services, who gave an overview of the annual observance and historical timeline that gave rise to Black August out of the California Prisons system. He also covered how Control Units are used by prison systems to oppress and isolate political prisoners from their support and prisoner organizing.

Despite the US government's lies that it holds no political prisoners in its prisons, Alvaro Luna Hernandez is an internationally recognized political prisoner imprisoned in Texas. Alvaro was a fierce advocate for the rights of immigrants, and other poor and oppressed barrios, in Houston, Texas, in the 90's. He spearheaded the Movement to Free undocumented Mexican immigrant RICARDO ALDAPE GUERRA from Texas' death row in 1996, framed for the killing of a Houston cop.
